Just because you drive a Prius...

Observed by bbond on Fri, Apr 24 2009

How green is it for a Green Taxi Prius to block the bike lane?

Maybe part of the Green Taxi experience should be blocking the vehicle lane while bikes can whiz by.

you'll have to watch out to avoid being doored by passengers getting out on the curb side.

This is totaly legal. This Green Cab driver does it right. If you ride a bike you are not allowed to pass on the right side. Our passengers have to exit on the curb side. We pull into the bike lane for your safety. If you hit the opening door on the curb side, you pay! Nobody has the right of way, we all share the streets of our San Francisco.

Let's start with the fact that it's not YOUR bike lane, any more than streets without bike lanes are off limits to bikes. Cabs by necessity, just like delivery vehicles, must pull to the right to accept or discharge passengers. They are allowed by PD, DPT and MTA to stop or even park temporarily in bus, white, yellow and even blue zones for that purpose. Though I am an avid cyclist myself, I recognize that I must share the streets with other vehicles. What I find disgraceful about many cyclists is their selfish disregard for others, especially when riding at night WITHOUT LIGHTS. Just as you suggest bikes use the auto lanes -- which bikes do anyway -- I suggest cars ride at night without lights. Give respect, get respect.

This is ignorance. The bicycle coalition directs us to drop off our fares as far to the right as possible so that the bicyclist does not get doored by the exiting passenger. The bicycle is supposed to pass on the left. You should familiarize yourself with the realities of the situation and to end the immature, irresponsible and conspicuous finger pointing.
