Bike Lane Violations in San Francisco
Cab double parked on Fell street (10/10 for hazard creation)
fell and broderick, San francisco, CA
This cab from Bay Cab (2 stars on yelp, pretty good for a cab company) is blocking the Fell street bike plane forcing bikes to pull out into streaming 30mph traffic. A particularly excellent place to park to cause maximum hazard.
Fedex truck fits perfectly into Market Street bike lanes
market and 11th, San francisco, CA
Supreme casual disrespect ...
The Fedex truck fits perfectly into Market Street bike lanes. The particularly annoying thing about this is that 11th Street just round the corner has tons of parking.
Brand New Bike Lane!
Townsend and 4th, San francisco, CA
Well, we finally get a bike lane striped on Townsend and this yahoo comes and blocks it right at rush hour. I get off Caltrain at 5pm on the nose, take a nice left (all excited to ride down to 5th street), and this is what I see.
I went to Performance Bike and looped back down Townsend to go home and there was a UPS truck blocking this exact same spot. I didn't bother to get a picture because I figured this is going to be a pretty common sight. Bike lane enforcement, anyone?
It's the thought that counts.
8th St and Market, San francisco, CA
As I came upon this I thought how nice it was for Mr "Safety Driven", license # A6171, to leave me some room between the two buses. That quickly faded to frustration. There's so much wrong with this situation: first the black Bauer's van is taking up a portion of the bike lane and then "Safety Driven" decides to load and load his passengers into what's left of it. Taking the hole shot between the two buses was too dicey so I opted to go around.
5:20 pm rush our parking in bikes-only lane
Market Street @ 8th Street, San francisco, CA
Car parked in the bike lane, deflecting bikes into vehicular traffic, outbound, during rush hour. Thanks for sharing the road.
Hotel Whitcomb Illegally Seizes 100% of Market Street Bicycle Facility
1231 Market Street, San francisco, CA
8:00am, inbound, rush hour, Friday July 16 2010. Bike lane closed to bicycles, permanently converted to illegal bus parking for the Hotel Whitcomb.
The Hotel Whitcomb has effectively eliminated 100% of the bike facility on the 1230 block of Market Street during the morning rush hour, forcing cyclists to dance with streetcars and buses. There is no word yet on when or if the SFMTA and SFPD will ever reopen the "bike lane" to bicycles...
Protected Green Bike Lane = Free Parking for Trucks and Buses
1234 Market Street, San francisco, CA
There is no safety benefits to the blockaded inbound "protected green lane" in front of the Hotel Whitcomb.
This latest dangerous blockade occured at 8am during the morning rush hour. And why not? Every person operating a motor vehicle in San Francisco knows there is absolutely no price to pay in shutting down bicycle lanes and endangering the lives of SF cyclists.
Embarcadero
Ferry Building, San francisco, CA
Usually it is the Amtrak buses blocking the bike lane, but not today. The honors go to Genentech. Extra irony for unloading a bike while in a bike lane.
Green Lane Blockade Continues at Hotel Whitcomb
1231 Market Street, San francisco, CA
Yet another tour bus illegally blockades the "protected" green bike lane in front of the Hotel Whitcomb, 7:40am Friday June 18th, 2010.
Another Tour Bus Blocks Green Lane at Hotel Whitcomb
1231 Market Street, San francisco, CA
Tour bus blocks Market Street "protected bike lane" in front of the Hotel Whitcomb.
Tour Van Blocks Market Green Lane
1231 Market Street, San francisco, CA
Friday, June 4, 2010. 7:50am.
San Francisco Minibus #93 blocks the inbound, rush-direction "protected" green bike lane. The driver refused to pull forward. I called the number on the offending vehicle (777-5555) and a very nice lady said she would have a word with him.
Good Cop Breaks Bus Blockade at InterContinental
Howard and Fifth Streets, San francisco, CA
Outbound Howard Street in front of the InterContinental Hotel, 5:45pm Wednesday June 2, 2010.
A tour bus blockade of the outbound bike lane during the peak of the evening bicycle commute was broken by a diplomatic local Parking and Traffic cop. Officer Mike (badge #258) talked to hotel staff, the bus drivers, and an open-lane activist, giving all a fair listen. Witnessing dozens of bike commuters forced out into dangerous speeding car traffic, he was not able to cite a moving violation like blocking the bike lane. Noting the curb there is zoned for taxi loading and not for bus loading, the officer was able to convince the drivers to move their buses to a wider bus parking lane east of the hotel. Around 6:20pm, the Howard Street bicycle lane was reopened to bicycles.
More than one level of InterContinental Hotel staff took the lead in arguing against any enforcement whatsoever of the bicycle lane fronting their property. At one point a hotel employee told me the sidewalk is private property of the hotel, suggesting I should not wait there even for the police to arrive.
Chatting away on the old celluar phone
4th and Howard, San francisco, CA
Hard to tell from the second photo but the driver had courteously pulled into the bike lane to avoid blocking auto traffic while he dialed someone.
Headed toward Fulton on Baker at Hayes
Baker and Hayes, San francisco, CA
Pulled away as I started to take a photo -- couldn't grab the plate.
"I'm only here for a minute"
Fulton and Pierce, San francisco, CA
Couldn't get the plate.. have to work on getting closer.
Another bimmer getting coffee
691 14th st, San francisco, CA
Maybe a moment of indecision about how to get on Landers.
Witness protection program.
7th street at Bryant, San francisco, CA
I'm not sure why this government vehicle could not pull in the courthouse's driveway to drop its "precious" passenger.

7th street at Bryant, San francisco, CA
Well where are the cops when we need them?
Doing laundry too.
691 14th st, San francisco, CA
And darn, what's up with his license plate? I will have to get closer next time.
His brain needs the coffee.
691 14th st, San francisco, CA
This guy was getting coffee. He sat there for about 5 minutes.
valencia at 22nd
valencia at 22nd, San francisco, CA
seems there was even enough room in the delivery parking spot for the driver to park.. would rather not take the time and instead take up the whole bike lane plus part of the auto lane.
San Jose at Randall
San Jose at Randall, San francisco, CA
EVERY school morning. Blocking both the bike lane and the sidewalk. Endangering all those little children walking to school, as well as every other person walking or cycling through this area. I've called 311 a few times, but only once actually got through to actually report the violation. The Mazda driving woman who has been using this spot as her own personal parking spot every morning for more than a year has set a precedent; many others also park here "oh, just for a few minutes" blocking both the bike lane and the sidewalk.
Sleeping in the Bike Lane
Embarcadero and bryant, San francisco, CA
Here is a Veolia/SuperShuttle bus driver accomplishing a rare global warming trifecta - parking in bike lane, idling his engine, and sleeping on the job (see photo). Such multitasking is rare, even in this day and age. I hope he isn't too tired to shuttle 60 people around the Bay Area every day - could be dangerous. He sure looks cozy in there. Maybe we should just put a couch in the bike lane so he is more comfortable?
I think his girlfriend was putting on her makeup
1245 Market St., San francisco, CA
i rolled up to the window of this car and gave the driver a friendly, hey you've got your crossover SUV parked in my bike lane. (the car had been sitting in the bike lane through at least three light changes).
he turned to the woman sitting next to him who was doing something with a cosmetics bag (was she really sitting there putting on her makeup) and gestured to her to hurry up and get out of the car.
Hey, you got your Lexus in my bike lane!
Valencia st and 24th street, San francisco, CA
This Lexis is parked in the bikelane on Valencia just before 24th Street during the busy morning commute hours.
A bonus, when the driver saw me taking a photo of his license plate he decided to circle the block.
what was extra frustrating about this guy is that there were metered parking spaces available just up the block had he bothered to parallel park rather than just parking in the bike lane.
600 Townsend shuttle picks up workers by parking in the bike lane
1245 Market St., San francisco, CA
As seen by the third picture (click through entry to see more photos), this is the shuttle picking up 600 Townsend employees at Civic Center and ferrying them to the south of market work place. transit for employees is laudable. but the daily pick up spot should not be in the bike lane.
Divine Transportation trying to push bicyclists into the hearafter?
1245 Market St., San francisco, CA
A tour bus sits in the bikelane near Hotel Whitcomb, forcing cyclists out of the bikelane and into dangerous traffic.
Bus-Blocking Amtrak driver to biker "FU A'hole . . . All aboard?"
Embarcadero and Bryant ST, San francisco, CA
Here is an Amtrak contracted bus parked two feet off the curb and blocking most of the bike lane on the Embarcadero. While taking the picture the driver asked me what I was doing. "You are blocking the bike lane, sir," I replied. He eloquently responded, "Fuck you, asshole, don't you have anything better to do?" He did move the bus, however!
Dolby, hear this: stop parking in the bike lane!
1245 Market St., San francisco, CA
It must be the same company that runs these employee shuttles that park for pickup in the bike lane on Market between 8th and 9th
Adobe, can you photoshop this bus out of my bike lane?
1245 Market St., San francisco, CA
Adobe makes great products. And it's great that it provides a shuttle for employees. But it's not great that it parks in the bike lane.
See the full posting to click on the photo which shows the sign on the side of the bus which sports the Adobe logo and "CIVIC CENTER SHUTTLE
Tour bus at Hotel Whitcomb
1245 Market St., San francisco, CA
Again, a tour bus queues up in the bike lane a few yards away from Hotel Whitcomb.
She had her macbook propped up against the steering wheel.
1355 valencia st., San francisco, CA
in the popular valencia street bike lane, with cyclists streaming by, a woman sits in the front of her minivan typing on a macbook.
i actually stopped to say to her through the closed window - it's not ok to be stopped in the bike lane. she didn't move.
Shuttle pickup at Hotel Whitcomb?
1245 Market St., San francisco, CA
not sure if this is part of the 600 townsend shuttle or not. but private tour companies / shuttle providers keep using the bike lane in front of hotel whitcomb to pick up passengers forcing cyclists into traffic while they idle in our lane.
Tour buses at Hotel Whitcomb
1245 Market St., San francisco, CA
why even have a bike lane if it's just going to be used as a tour bus parking lot?
Hotel Whitcomb strikes again
1245 Market St., San francisco, CA
The bike lane in front of Hotel Whitcomb is once again a parking lot for tour buses.
No parking sign . . . parked in the bike lane
chula vista and ralston, Belmont, CA
Here is a temporary no parking sign parked squarely in the bike lane. The event occurred almost 48 hours ago but the sign is still blocking bike commuter traffic. Next year could we place these in the gutter next to the street?
There are no personal carbon offsets for driving a Prius
ralston and Chula Vista, Belmont, CA
Just because you drive a Prius doesn't mean that you get to create some pollution elsewhere - you park in the bike lane -> bikers get discouraged from biking due to safety concerns -> they drive instead. Next time take advantage of your empty driveway, please.
Shuttle to 600 Townsend?
1245 Market St., San francisco, CA
Hipsters run to catch this shuttle which on its side (not pictured) indicates that it is run by 600 Townsend, a conference/business facility at 7th and Townsend.
If you know anyone who works there, can you tell them NOT to have the impromptu shuttle stop located right in the middle of a bike lane?
moving van, stationary violation
Valencia St and 17th St, San francisco, CA
Moving van parked in the southbound bike lane on Valencia during evening commute.
Amtrak - A green solution to our energy woes?
Bryant and Embarcadero, San francisco, CA
Nice big Amtrak bus parked 2 feet off the curb and thus in the middle of the bike lane on Embarcadero. I am not sure if this is part of Amtrak's campaign of getting people off of the road and onto the train, but I am not sold.
Worse yet, they were idling. Driver was not in his seat. What is the MPG on a big ass bus moving at 0 MPH????
Where would Jesus park?
1325 valencia st, San francisco, CA
He looked like a nice guy. He was parked right in the bike lane and running into the Bethel Christian Church at the corner of Valencia and 24th Sts in the Mission.
But would Jesus park in the bike lane, especially during the busy morning commute?
Lincoln Town Car blocks busy Valencia St. bikelane
1325 valencia st, San francisco, CA
This Lincoln Town Car was idling in the bike lane on Valencia during the busy morning commute. Bicyclists were having to merge into a single lane of car commuters.
Continuing problem at Hotel Whitcomb
1245 Market St., San francisco, CA
This driver actually moved after he noticed my taking a picture of his van.
See how bicyclists have to merge into downtown traffic to get around the parking lot in the bike lane.
Just because you belong to the Sierra Club
1234 Valencia Street, San francisco, CA
The guy in this VW Jetta was talking on his iPhone, I think. I was late for dinner and tempted just to keep going. But then I saw the Sierra Club sticker in the back window (click through to see additional photos, including a Sierra Club sticker close up!)
Just because you belong to the Sierra Club doesn't mean you can create a dangerous situation for bicyclists while you double park in the bike lane and talk on your iPhone.
Great non-profit, but no respect for bike lanes
Embarcadero ST and Brannan St, San francisco, CA
The Delancey Street Foundation is a wonderful charity. I have used them for several moves and donated hundreds of $. Unfortunately, I won't be giving them any more of my $ until they stop needlessly endangering the lives of bikers. I have asked their drivers three times to park on the curb in order to free the bike lane. As you can see here, they needlessly left 2+ feet on the right side, forcing them into the bike lane and me and my bike into 40 mph Embarcadero traffic.
Belmont: Why dirty up your driveway when you can block the bike lane?
1513 Ralston AVE, Belmont, CA
This pickup truck is very patriotic but doesn't seem to give a hoot about neighbors who bike or walk - it is blocking the both the bike lane and the sidewalk. The driveway next to the pickup has plenty of free space. Also, wouldn't the neighborhood look nicer if there were no cars parked in the street? It is ironic that local building code requires that houses have a minimum amount of off-street parking but residents have no incentive to use it.
FedEx: Market & Valencia
Market St. and Valencia St., San francisco, CA
a FedEx truck is double parked in the bike lane at Market & Valencia. it's extra dicey because bikes then have to swing into a lane with trolley tracks.
you can see from the third picture that the truck is parked directly over the bike lane indicator.
